CARING FOR YOUR DIAMOND JEWELRY

Take Extra Precautions When Traveling

If you take jewelry with you when traveling, don’t pack it in luggage that you plan to check or in luggage to be given to the bell captain at a hotel or a ship’s porters, etc. Keep it with you.

Never leave jewelry in your hotel room. Wherever possible, obtain a safety deposit box in which to store your jewelry, even for part of a day. Be wary of in-room safes that are operated by programming your own private code; professionals can quickly and easily override your code and remove the contents of the safe.

Purchase a “body pouch” that can be concealed under clothing for when you must carry a valuable piece. Never go sightseeing with valuables in a purse or pocket.

For customs purposes, it can be useful to take a photo (a simple Polaroid) of the jewelry pieces you take with you. Have the photo dated and notarized before departure, so you can prove that you did not purchase it abroad. Otherwise you may be asked to pay duty on it.

Keep a Photo Inventory of your jewelry. You don’t need profession al photos; simply lay your jewelry out on a flat surface and take several snapshots. They will be invaluable should there be a robbery, providing detectives with a visual record that will make it easier to recognize the stolen pieces and claim what is yours should the jewelry ever be recovered. Photos are also important for insurance purposes and can aid in replacement. Where a piece is one-of-a-kind, and you want to have some one make a replica, a photo can provide a custom jeweler with the necessary details in order to duplicate it.
